1987 XV 1100 running problems

Ok, I have an XV1100 that will start just fine and will stay running as long as it is in neutral. As soon as you put it in gear, any gear, it shuts off. It will start right back up without any problems only in neutral. I have replaced the handlebar switch and the kickstand switch (but with used parts) and it does the same thing. I have even bypassed the kickstand switch and it still does the same thing. Please help me as I am missing riding in the summer.
